After nine years of dating, my fiancé finally reached his goal of becoming an LAFD firefighter. Neither of us had felt comfortable with getting married until he had a achieved his life-long dream and had a steady career. We both agreed about six years ago that we would get married after each of us had our own lives in order. The week of his graduation from the fire academy, Jose asked me for a long weekend in Oxnard, CA. We spent a great day together relaxing, watching TV and napping, our favorite things to do.
Toward the end of the afternoon, he asked if I would like to have a glass of wine and go for a walk on the beach at sunset. Of course I jumped on the idea; who turns that down? After walking on the beach, we sat down on a bench, and he started to talk about us and how far we had come. Not knowing any better, someone would have thought we were breaking up. To my surprise, he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife with the most serious look on his face that I have seen in all nine years of our relationship. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting after our many years of growing together than the cool breeze of the ocean and the sunset. It was simple and sweet.
