My fiancé and I have been high school sweethearts since the ninth grade. We had been together for over seven and a half years when he decided that, after his graduation from his Master's program from Notre Dame, we should take a celebratory trip to Puerto Rico.
It was a very hot trip in August, with temperatures in the high 90's the entire time. We stayed at a beautiful resort in Condado and everything was going so well. That was until hurricane Faye came knocking at our door! One of my biggest fears ever has always been hurricanes, so when I heard that it was on its way I was very anxious and upset.
My fiancé Joshua had told me that since we weren't able to have dinner outside, which we had been doing for the whole week, that we would go to Ruth's Chris steakhouse. It was the most amazing meal that I have ever had. He got us a bottle of wine while we were there; we talked and laughed for the longest time, so happy to be on our first vacation together.
When we arrived back to the hotel, the wind and rain was really starting to pick up. No television signal and no pay per view in sight, but we did manage to still have internet. He told me to get online and to start building the ring of my dreams, just so that he would be able to have a good idea for what I may want, "in a year or two." After building my dream ring and trying to forget that the wind and rain were getting stronger with every minute that passed, I turned the computer towards him, only to see him on one knee, holding the most beautiful ring that I had ever seen.
He then said, "How about this one? Lauren, will you marry me?" I cried and laughed all at once, and said, "Yes!" He had already asked my dad for permission to marry me, which was the icing on the cake for the whole experience because he knew how much that meant to me. Because of his planning, love, and being the amazing man that he is, I never had given one more thought to the hurricane in progress just outside of our window. By the morning, the hurricane had passed and we had a beautiful and sunny last day in Puerto Rico. I can't wait to marry this wonderful man!
