My fiancé, Chris, is in the Navy and was home on leave for a few weeks. Chris sprung a surprise visit to my dad to ask for my hand in marriage. My dad of course said yes! The stage was set. Chris picked out my ring, and was ready to set into action the engagement he'd planned since he'd been in Iraq on his first deployment.
With the help of one of my close friends, Chris set up the engagement to take place at Avila Beach, near where I was going to school. Chris' parents were visiting, so they decided to have a beach bonfire. There just so happened to be some extra family that stopped by too. We had claimed our fire pit for the bonfire and my future mother-in-law said she wanted some coffee. This was the planned decoy to help Chris get me to the other end of the beach.
Long story short, Chris asked me to go for a walk on the beach. We were approached by a stranger, a man and his dog that were walking toward us. He stopped to give Chris and I an old leather book with a story in it. I thought this was random, but I was curious to see what the story said. We sat down on a rock and began to read.
The story was about different characters, but mirrored Chris and I's life and relationship to a tee. Halfway through, I had figured it out! Chris had written the story, but changed some names. He proposed there on the beach at sunset. Some call him the most romantic man of the year! I was so surprised. When we went back to the bonfire on the beach, my parents had driven down from Northern California as an added surprise! We enjoyed the rest of the night roasting s'mores and hanging out with our family and friends.
