Tosha D.

My boyfriend Dwayne and I had planned a couple of months before that we were going to see each other the weekend of June 20th. At the time, I lived in Georgia while he lived in Ohio. What we didn't plan was the extra weekend (Memorial Day) that Dwayne would spend in Atlanta. We had a great weekend and that was the weekend that Dwayne asked my father permission for my hand. I had known that he had plans to speak to my dad, and I wondered why he was asking so early because I thought that our engagement would take place later on in the year. Dwayne told me that he just wanted to go ahead and get that formality out of the way. Around a month later, we had plans to attend his fraternity's cookout. I woke up knowing that this was going to be a great day. That morning, I had to teach summer school, and I left early to catch my plane. When the plane landed, I called Dwayne and let him know that we had landed. He didn't answer the phone so I proceeded to baggage claim without hearing from him. He finally called and said he had gotten stuck in traffic but would be at the airport soon. He finally pulled up and we got on our way.

We started to drive to downtown Baltimore right near the harbor. I had never been there before so we walked around a little bit. On the way towards the restaurants, we saw these dragon paddleboats and of course I thought it would be romantic to go on them so I suggested it. However, we decided against it because we were both starving. So, we ate a very romantic dinner at the world famous Philip's Seafood Restaurant right on the waterfront. Dinner was delicious and the company was even better. After eating dinner, Dwayne suggested that we go ring shopping. Of course, I perked up even more and got all excited. However, the jewelry store that was in the harbor was more like a costume jewelry store. We went into a store, but I didn't see any diamonds, so we left. We got to the place where the boats were, and we decided to go on the electric boats so we could sit instead of paddle. The electric boats weren't nearly as cute, but I didn't mind. We had the boat for thirty minutes and sat taking pictures of each other. Dwayne kept asking me what time it was, which I thought was strange, but I didn't say anything.

He then turned to me and asked me why I loved him, and I started telling him. A couple of weeks earlier, I had written down the reasons I loved him. He asked me if that was what I would read if I proposed to him because earlier in the week, I had told him I would propose to him because I was watching a wedding show where the girl proposed to her man. At the time, he thought it was funny. So, while sitting out on the boat, I told him that I would propose to him if he wanted me to. And then, in my mind, I really started contemplating my proposal to him. However, something didn't feel right even though he was suggesting it. Then he said, "How would you want me to propose?" I told him that when he proposed, I wanted him to get down on one knee and confess his love to me. At that point, it still hadn't hit me because I was thinking that he was just talking. Earlier that day, he had told me that he would propose in the Bahamas in July, and we would get married the same weekend. He started digging in his pocket and said, "Well, Tosha, I can't get down on one knee, but I do love you with all my heart, and I wanted to know if you would marry me?" I still hadn't caught on because he was digging in his pocket so I said, "I know. I'm not asking you to get down on one knee. You can do that when you propose." I still had not caught on. Then, at that moment, he pulled out the ring box, and I start screaming, "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh" over and over. He put the ring on my finger and I screamed, "Yes!" but I couldn't stop laughing. I think I was laughing because I was so shocked since I didn't even know he had the ring. I was laughing and crying at the same time. We kissed and hugged, and then I got on the phone to call my mom, sister and friends! It was the happiest day of my life and a night full of surprises.
