On the day of the proposal, I was so nervous. I couldn't think of anything that really expressed what I felt. So, during the eight hours while I was a work, I was confused on what I was going to proclaim. But the time came when I had to leave work and I rushed through traffic. I pulled into a Conroy's flower shop and picked up some roses, and fled to the supermarket to pick up a bottle of wine. So after that we finally met up at my house, I thought I'd wait and get in a good shave before she came over. This was a bad idea; I ripped my face open.
So, we met up and I gave her the flowers and we were off! We ate at the Cheesecake Factory, and then headed to the Gondola Getaway in Long Beach. It was very cold. We arrived there an hour too early, so we just sat inside the car waiting for time to come, listening to oldies, singing our hearts out!
Finally, 9:30 pm came around and then we headed down to the boat. The funny part was while we were cruising along, a party in another boat came by and they shouted, "Have you proposed yet?" I thought, "Oh great, you gave it away." This didn't faze Jessica, thank goodness.
The harbor that we toured was very nice and the weather was perfect. Our gondolier, Greg, stopped and sang a song in Italian and then continued down through the harbor. He then stopped again two bridges further and sang another. I asked him if I could stand up, and he agreed.
I started my speech by thanking Jessica for another year spent. I then switched it over to I want to spend the rest of my life with you and will you marry me. Her eyes got glossy and in my head I was like, "She's going cry," but she didn't. That was probably the most excited and happiest I've ever seen her. If she was capable of doing a back flip, I think she would have. Later, when we arrived back at home, we picked up some coffee and I told her all of those little secrets that I was holding onto for so long.
I had this habit where I would imagine how it would be if Tom would propose at a certain place. So, if we went to a nice dinner, I would wonder how it would be if tonight were the night he proposed. I really thought that an engagement wasn't anywhere in the near future, so in this respect, I had no idea. I thought that it was a little unusual that he bought flowers and had a camera with him when we went to dinner, but didn't think much of it.
Dinner was at the Cheesecake Factory was delicious. After dinner, we drove to Long Beach and just waited in the car. When I found out it was a Gondola company, I was really excited. They were just like the gondolas in Venice and even the gondolier was dressed the same. It was really cold and each boat had blankets to combat the mid-December chill. There were really beautiful houses around us and the lights on shore were gorgeous.
This scenery kept me distracted, until Tom decided to stand up in the boat. I really thought he would fall in the water, but he started his speech and I finally understood what was happening. He was so cute standing in the boat and then trying to get down on one knee. It was such a great night and finding out how he planned all of it was a perfect ending to the night.
