Shaun proposed at a rose garden in North Carolina. He asked me to run an errand with him at North Carolina State University's library. We got there, but it was closed. He asked about getting ice cream, but I told him that I had just gotten some from the grocery store. He then suggested going to the rose garden, since we were on that side of town. We both like going and went often, so I didn't think anything of it.
When we got there, I saw that it was bright down in the rose garden and thought there was a wedding going on. I was still in a t-shirt and yoga pants and neither of us had showered. When we were walking down the stairs, I noticed an Adidas t-shirt of Shaun's that my mom had borrowed to garden in earlier that day. Shaun turned me around, and then we both noticed my parents' car. That is when I figured it out. We walked around the rose garden as it was getting close to sunset. I took a photo of us up close together, knowing that this was the last moment we would just be boyfriend and girlfriend. I was trying to stay calm so I could remember the words that he was about to say to me.
We followed the path to a table filled with candles, roses, rose petals and "our " wine (wine we had bought when we first started dating and had saved for a special occasion). I was looking around for my parents and Shaun asked what I was looking for. He then grabbed my hands and started telling me that I was the love of his life and that he couldn't imagine his life without me. I could tell he was a little nervous because he repeated himself. Shaun then sat me down on the picnic table, and he got down on one knee. He took the ring out of his pocket and asked me if I would spend the rest of my life with him. I said yes of course! We then opened the wine and shared some. I was still in shock and shaking a bit. Shaun's cell phone rang after a few minutes, and it was my parents. He told them they could come out of hiding. My mom gave us both a hug and my dad had glassy eyes. They both congratulated us and left us to enjoy the moment further.
