Tobias and I met nine years ago. My heart was broken after breaking up with my first boyfriend and I became good friends with Tobias's brother, Erick. Erick and I hung out every day, but he never mentioned his brother to me, which was fine because I couldn't imagine falling in love again. One day, I was at Erick's house and noticed a family picture on the wall. In it stood Tobias, and once again my heart opened. I asked Erick who Tobias was and couldn't believe we had never met in all the time I had spent at Erick's house. Later that same day I took a nap and as I fell asleep I found myself praying that when I woke up that Tobias would be there. An hour later I woke up to the most infectious laugh I had ever heard.
As I went into Erick's kitchen, my heart nearly exploded with excitement as I laid my eyes on Tobias laughing. It truly was love at first sight! Now, almost ten years later we are still together and more in love than ever. I thought we would never get married because so many years had passed and he had never popped the question. I love Tobias and would spend all my days with him even if we didn't wed, but it is something that I have always wanted. Much to my surprise, on a vacation two weeks ago he finally asked me to marry him.
It was our last day in Molokai, Hawaii, and the first day we had to ourselves. It was a bit stormy outside, but we decided to go to the west end of the island. Just as Tobias started telling me how much he was in love with me, a down pour started and we ran back to the car. He then announced, "Let's go to Papuhauku," another beach all the way on the other side of the island. So we went for a drive to the east end. By the time we got there it was pretty rainy and windy. We walked a bit on the beach, talked, laughed and decided to head back to our hotel.
As we drove back the sun was setting on the ocean and I commented how beautiful it was. Tobias thought for sure this was the perfect moment and pulled over on the side of a pier. We jumped out and before you know it we were attacked by mosquitoes! I suggested we go, so we jumped in the car and returned to the hotel. Later that night we were at our hotel and Tobias suggested we return to our friend's private beach. We were leaving in the morning so I thought, "why not." As we walked through a small pasture to the beach the moon shined really bright. It was so bright that I could even see these huge rocks on the beach that were not there before. As we got closer we realized those rocks were actually families of sea turtles. It felt so magical.
Tobias knew this had been the moment he was waiting for and he tenderly asked me to marry him. I was so stunned I started crying and hugged and kissed him. He eventually asked me if that was a yes. I said without hesitation "YES!" We felt like the turtles were a beautiful symbol for our love and marriage since they represent longevity. After we told our friends who own the beach what had happened, they said the turtles were giving us their blessing. So we are now planning to get married on the very same beach where Tobias proposed to me. He is the love of my life and I wish there was some way to convey the magic he brings to my life in this story.
