Erin K.

On New Year's Eve, my boyfriend and I went to a nice Italian restaurant for a rare date night for just the two of us. After a wonderful meal, we headed back to our apartment to watch the fireworks shoot off from the Space Needle. We had some time to spare before midnight, so my boyfriend told me to go sit on the couch because he had something for me. In the back of my mind, I was thinking, "Is this it?" But, being a sarcastic goof, I jokingly asked, "Is it a puppy?" He said no and then told me to close my eyes. I could feel the anticipation building, and then I felt him set something in my lap. I opened my eyes to find a large, flat, rectangular box. I was instantly convinced that this was not a proposal and told myself I was silly to think he would be proposing.

I opened the box and inside was a beautiful pearl necklace. Not being one to wear much jewelry, I was completely thrown off by the gift. I thanked him for it and he said, "Well, I got you this necklace because I didn't know what kind of a ring you would like." Then, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I thought it was a sweet and clever way to get around the pressure of trying to pick out the perfect ring for me by himself. Plus, this way, we could go shopping for both of our rings together. The process of choosing rings was a lot of fun and something I wouldn't have experienced if had he just proposed with a ring instead.
