The date was Friday, January 16th, 2009. The time was 3:30am and my boyfriend, Anthony, and I were frantically running around trying to pack for a long weekend in Phoenix, AZ. We were running late and afraid we were going to miss our flight out of Philadelphia. I was particularly stressed because we were traveling to Phoenix so I could run in the PF Changs "Rock n' Roll" marathon as a member of Team in Training. It was my first marathon and I was nervous. We made it to the airport and our flight left on-time!
We arrived at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Phoenix. The weather was beautiful, 75 degrees and sunny. We checked into our room which was on the 17th floor. The view was incredible. With little time to relax, we made our way over to the expo so I could check in and get my timing chip and bib for the race. We didn't stay long because we had dinner reservations at Elements at Camelback Mountain. We had been looking forward to this dinner for quite some time. We were in our room getting ready and Anthony kept telling me that our hotel provided transportation, a shuttle, to this particular restaurant. Of course I thought he must have misunderstood, so I kept insisting that I would go downstairs and check with Concierge. Anthony flipped out and told me to just trust him! So, I didn't argue.
We were again running late so I was rushing him to hurry and get ready because we would miss the "shuttle." 10 minutes later we were in the elevator on our way to the lobby. We walk out front and there was no shuttle to be found. Instead, there was a white limo. Anthony says to me, "See, I got you a limo." I respond by saying, "Yeah right," only because every time we see a limo that's what he tells me. Only this time, the limo driver came over and escorted us inside. I was in shock but still suspected nothing. I thought we were just riding to dinner in style instead of in a shuttle! We drank a bottle of champagne on the way and took in the beautiful scenery.
We arrived at the restaurant which is actually a part of The Sanctuary Resort and Spa. They opened the doors for us and escorted us out to the back terrace. It was amazing. We ordered two glasses of white wine and sat back to take in the view. We were looking out onto Camelback Mountain and it was at sunset. I comment on how beautiful a place we are in and how lucky we are. Anthony then turns to me and tells me how proud he is of me with my running and that he will support whatever I want to do in life and that he wants me to be a part of his forever. He then gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him. I was in complete shock. I kept asking if I was dreaming. The entire staff knew about the proposal and was looking out the window of the restaurant. Of course I said, "Yes!"
We were able to take in the moment and watch the sunset together. We ate dinner at the best table in the restaurant. There was a bottle of Champagne waiting for us that Anthony's boss had sent with a note of congratulations. It was above and beyond anything I could have imagined. The next day we rented a car and drove through Sedona together. And the following day was race day. I wore my Team in-training singlet and wrote my name on the front and "just engaged" on the back. I completed that Marathon in 4 hour and 59 minutes! Anthony was waiting for me at the finish line. We are getting married May 15, 2010 and can't wait!
