Ben and I had been discussing marriage for quite some time, so I knew that he was planning to propose sometime around graduation. Ben, however, is great at keeping secrets from me, so I had no idea he was planning to propose on my birthday. I was actually quite certain that it wasn't going to happen that day. Ben and I went to North Carolina to visit my family on my birthday weekend. My grandparents, Nana and Poppy, were in town visiting. The night before my birthday we all went out to a really nice restaurant in downtown Charlotte called Sullivan's. I thought for certain that if Ben were going to propose that weekend, it would be when we were all out and dressed up. So when it didn't happen at dinner, I figured I had a while longer to wait.
But, to my surprise, he proposed the next morning while I was in my pajamas. Good thing I had put a little makeup on that morning, knowing that birthday pictures would be taken! Ben had my mom help my sisters make a book for me called "The ABCs of Brittney." They gave the book to me after opening presents, and made me read it out loud. Ben had come up with a characteristic of mine (luckily all nice!) for each letter of the alphabet. My sisters then read a cue card that Ben had made for them. It said, "Brittney, we love you and Ben very much and we want you and Ben to be together forever."
Then Ben got up and pulled the ring out of his pocket and said, "Now that you know my ABCs, at this time will you marry me?" I said, "YES!!!" It was the morning of my 22nd birthday, and it meant a lot to me to have my family there. I'm so grateful that we have pictures to help us remember all the details of that special moment forever.
