For my birthday weekend, my boyfriend Mike and I headed from DC to Richmond. While driving, Mike handed me a card which said, "I hope this is a start to a wonderful weekend with you. I love you. " I thought it was sweet but didn't consider it to be a prelude to anything. During our car ride, Mike explained to me that he needed to visit his old professor at the University of Richmond to go over the Washington Semester program he was helping with. I was kind of annoyed by his request to stop because he knew how homesick I was.
An hour later, we pulled into the University of Richmond and parked by the lake on campus. It was the most gorgeous fall day, and Mike explained to me that we needed to cross the bridge over the lake and walk up a hill to get to his professor's office. I obliged and began walking. We were talking about fishing in the lake, and then unexpectedly, Mike picked me up in his arms. I asked him what he was doing, but when I looked at his face, I instantly knew what was happening. Fifteen steps later, Mike placed me down in a gazebo over the lake with rose petals scattered on it, and he got down on one knee to ask me to spend the rest of his life with him. Of course I immediately said yes. Mike then pointed to the trees beyond the lake and there was my family, who had witnessed everything. The proposal was simply perfect and more than I could have ever imagined. Mike even hired a photographer to capture all of the precious moments of our engagement.
