My fiancé and I met about ten years ago when I was only 14 years old and he was 17 years old. He was a senior in high school and I was a freshman. We both worked at GreenSpring Village, which is a retirement home in Springfield, Virginia. We both happened to go to the same high school, but I never saw him.
After a year I started having a big crush on him - one of those crushes that all teenager girls had at that age. Whenever I would see him, I would turn red and my heart would beating so fast that I couldn't even bear to be next to him! I knew that he had some sort of feelings for me as well, because he would always bother me and tease me.
My sixteenth birthday was approaching, and a few of my older cousins knew that I had a crush on him, so one of my cousins brought him as one of my presents. We were talking for a couple of months, and on May 31st of that year he asked me out. We have been together ever since!
I never really expected a proposal from him because in our culture you do things like that differently. But that Memorial Day weekend I was supposed to go camping with my family on May 31, so he took me out for our anniversary the night before. He was acting really funny, but I didn't expect anything of it. After we had dinner, we went to another place for dessert, and right when he was about to take our exit to go home, he acted as if he missed it and he said, "Well, while we are here, let's go to the park and just walk around."
We did, and I was complaining about how late it was getting because I had to go and pack for the next day. He told me to come and sit on a bench, and on the bench was a scrapbook that he made. In the scrapbook, there were pictures of us throughout the years, and I thought this was a sweet anniversary present. I was approaching to the end of the book when I turned the page and saw a sticker of a bridal gown and a plus sign, and another sticker of a groom's tux and then an equal sign. Then I turned the page, and it said, "Will you marry me?"
As I looked up, he was on one knee holding the ring. I looked at my phone and I realized that it was May 31. He wanted to stall and waste time so that it would be the exact day of our anniversary. We started one chapter of our lives on May 31, 1998 and we started the next chapter ten years later on May 31, 2008.
