I'm in my second year of law school and was surprised by my boyfriend in the middle of finals week with tickets to the Metropolitan Opera for the night of my last final. I thought it was a lovely Christmas gift, but I didn't think too much of it at the time. My last final was a take-home exam, which I had one day to complete. Due to a terrible storm, the internet went out at my apartment exactly when the paper was due, so I had to get dressed and run to the school in a sleet storm in order to turn it in. My boyfriend came home to find me crying into a cocktail, exhausted and upset. We needed to be ready for the opera in exactly an hour and a half!
He was acting in a very nervous and strange manner all night. After the opera, he suggested that we go to Central Park because it had just snowed. I told him he was crazy because it was cold and wet, and I had only slept two hours the night before. We were going home! I went home, put on my pajamas and got into bed. My boyfriend came in the room with a box of raisins in his hand and said that he owed them to me. Our first meeting had been an awkward encounter where he had refused to sell me a box of raisins from the cafe he worked at because they were about to close, even though I had exact change, and he thought I was very cute. Sitting on top of the box of raisins was a beautiful engagement ring that he'd had made months earlier. I was shocked! Of course I said yes because he is the love of my life and the only man for me. Even though nothing went right that evening, it was perfect for us. My fiancé just wanted to make me happy and after waiting until I'd finished my finals, he couldn't wait a second longer to propose. We spent the rest of the night just enjoying being engaged in our small Brooklyn apartment. It was perfect!
