Etiquette Tips for Sending Out Your Wedding Save-the-Dates

You want your wedding day to be the happiest one of your life and for every little detail, from the floral arrangements to your save-the-dates, to be absolutely perfect. With Shutterfly, you can easily personalize your save-the-date cards and get them out in the mail in plenty of time. While we make things simple, following proper etiquette for these cards can be a little bit tougher.

Getting Started

As you start to customize your save-the-date cards, it’s a good idea to follow these basic etiquette guidelines:
  • Generally speaking, you should plan on sending out your save-the-dates about six months prior to your big day. If you’re planning a destination wedding, get your cards in the mail eight months before your wedding.

  • Only send out these cards to the people you definitely want to attend your wedding.

  • Include as much specific information about your wedding as you can, but remember that it’s okay if you don’t know everything yet.

Keep in mind that while your wedding dates can be personalized to match your wedding invitations and theme, they’re much less formal. Feel free to play with motifs, fonts, and colors to get your relatives and friends excited about your wedding day.

Be Specific

Even though the details of your wedding day might be a bit vague at this point, you need to be clear about exactly who’s invited to your wedding when you send out your save-the-dates. As you address your cards, include the names of the people you actually want attending on the envelope. This will prevent situations with assumed invitees and confusion in general.
While it’s a good idea to stick to these etiquette guidelines as you personalize your save-the-dates, especially where your guest list is concerned, don’t let them bog you down. Remember to have fun with the customization process and take the time to explore all of the design options we have to offer.

Customer reviews

April 20, 2015Perfect!

"These cards are absolutely gorgeous. The print is just delicate enough and the card stock was sturdy. I have gotten tons of compliments on them and am seriously considering purchasing the matching suite."

March 28, 2015Fabulous Card + Great Customer Service

"I had my eye on this card for a long time and was so excited when I received the final product. The cards arrived quickly and looked fabulous! The quality of the paper, the printing - everything was great. The customer service was great too. When I designed our card, I had two questions for the designer. One was about the text (I wanted to move a line further down) and another was an etiquette question. The designer not only fixed the line of text, but responded to my other question within a day! Needless to say, I highly recommend this design."

March 22, 2015Perfect Coasters

"I wanted something unique for our Save the Dates, and since we are having a beer themed wedding, the photo coasters were perfect!"

November 17, 2014Simple & Pretty

"We got these in Cabernet for our save the dates because the invitations we picked out (from this site) didn't have them. We are very happy with the quality of the paper and the clarity of the printing. We are considering getting the Thank-Yous also."

June 11, 2014Just as Ordered

"First time ordering from WPD. Everything was perfect on my Save the Date card. I ordered the card with the chambord (plum) color. Arrived 4 days early. Definitely ordering Invitations with WPD."
