Weddings offer ample opportunities to apply your handwriting skills. Many couples choose to use custom self-inking stamps or custom labels for return addresses. These look great and can save your best writing efforts for applying guest’s names and addresses. However you choose to address your invitations and thank you cards, keep these general rules of etiquette in mind.
Generally speaking, the outer envelope should be formal and contain full names and titles. There are varying rules for addressing envelopes to different types of couples and having a template on hand while you are writing addresses is a helpful reminder. For married couples, be sure to use Mr. and Mrs. in advance of their names. If one is a doctor, list their name first, preceded by their title. If both are doctors, you can apply the title before each name or simply preface their shared last name with, “The Doctors.”
Couples who live together but are unmarried should have both of their full names listed, preceded by the appropriate title, either “Mr.” or “Ms.” It is always acceptable to refer to a divorced woman as “Ms.,” followed by whichever last name she generally uses, either maiden or that of her former spouse.
The inner envelope can be more informal, listing only first names if that is your preference. For those wanting a more ceremonial look, titles and last names may be used here. Be sure to list the name of each member of the household you are inviting, including children.
Children living at home should be listed only on the inner envelope by first name. Be sure to send a separate invite to those 18 or older living away from home. If your wedding will be an adults-only affair, you can gently mention so on your website or to family and friends who can help spread the word.
"This stamp is perfect for save the dates, invites and thank you cards. We decided to get a stamp to save on having to hand-write our address on the back. Since we not married-yet, we placed our first names on the top lines. My fiance loves the stamp more than I do, he wants to keep it forever and that say something!"
"Love my address stamp. Makes stamping all my envelopes in bulk a breeze for all my wedding mailers :) I was apprehensive because I couldn't see an actual example of how it would look, but I was very happy with the product when it showed up."
"I absolutely LOVE this stamp! It works perfectly and is so awesome to use on anything! My family thinks it's so cute and I can't wait to stamp more things!! I have never been disappointed with anything from Wedding Paper Divas! Thank you for creating awesome products that help make my special day even more special!"
"I was looking for something to stamp the back of my invitations with, and this is PERFECT. I absolutely LOVE the stamp, especially that you don't have to buy a stamp pad for it. It's all right there, ready to use. I really liked the way that the designer made sure it all fit on the stamp too. I would buy this product again!"
"I ordered this stamp to use for addressing our enclosure cards. I was so impressed with the quality. The design is so lovely, and the stamp presses evenly so that the stamped envelope looks clean and professional. It doesn't stamp unevenly or skip sections of ink like some self-inking stamps tend to. I plan to buy another to use for my regular mail after the wedding (would be a lovely return address stamp for Christmas cards!)."
